Managing Back-to-School Skin Issues

As the summer winds down and kids head back to the classroom, it’s not uncommon for skin issues to start popping up. The combination of increased stress, irregular sleep schedules, less-than-ideal dining hall fare, and exposure to more germs can wreak havoc on complexions. But don’t worry – with the right skincare routine and a few smart strategies, you can keep those back-to-school skin problems at bay.

Breakouts

One of the most prevalent skin concerns for students is acne. The hormonal changes, increased oil production, and bacteria exposure that come with going back to school can all lead to breakouts. Combat this by incorporating an acid-based cleanser and serum into your routine to unclog pores. Follow up with a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer. And be sure to keep your hands away from your face to avoid transferring more bacteria.

Dullness & Dehydration

All the late nights cramming for exams and rushed meals can leave your skin looking drab and dull. Counteract this by exfoliating 1-2 times per week to slough off dead skin cells. Layer on hydrating serums and moisturizers. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides to lock in moisture. Additionally, don’t forget to drink plenty of water too!

The dry indoor air of classrooms, combined with stress, can cause eczema flare-ups or general skin irritation. Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and apply a rich, creamy moisturizer right after bathing to seal in hydration.
